Our names are Brianna and Zach Nelson. We are the typical couple from the midwest. We were high-school sweethearts, dated for 5 years and have been married for 9 years. We have spent half of our lives together, and we have married our true best friend and soul mate. We both went to college, where Zach got his BA in Industrial Management and Brianna earned a BS in Health/PE Education. Later Brianna went on to get a Master's in Education. Brianna currently teaches high school PE/Health and Zach is an operations coach at Lowe's Distribution Center.
Our journey to have a family started shortly after marriage, when in 2005 we were blessed with a beautiful son, Drew. In 2007, we were blessed again with a 2nd son, Reid. At 18 months of age on December 25, 2008, Reid was diagnosed with a rare auto-immune disorder called OMS (Opsoclonus Myoclonus Syndrome) which affects only 1 in 10 million. OMS causes the body to attack the brain and immune system, and is thought to be caused by a neuroblastoma tumor on the adrenal glands. Treatment is harsh chemotherapy, IVIG infusions and strong steroids. In October, 2009 Reid became very ill with a severe blood infection in which he was put on life support and later on ECMO. Reid's little body could not fight anymore, and he suffered a stroke in November while still on life support in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Reid earned his angel wings on November 18, 2009 in the loving arms of him mommy and daddy. You can read more about Reid's amazing fight at www.caringbridge.org/visit/reidnelson
7 months after Reid's passing, we were blessed to be pregnant with a little girl! Our daughter, Karling was born January 4, 2011, 10 weeks premature due to an infection Brianna had in her amniotic fluid. Karling was born with multiple infections including meningitis, and a heart infection that eventually went to her kidneys. Karling lived for 2 months in the NICU before passing away in the arms of her mommy on March 3, 2011.
After the passing of 2 beautiful children in a period of 15 months, we decided to keep moving forward to build the family of our dreams. To add to the devastation, after trying to conceive for over 1 year, Brianna and Zach sought the help of a fertility specialist in May 2012. After getting the diagnosis of Premature Ovarian Failure at 31 years of age, Zach and Brianna lost all hope of ever having another child of their own.
In November, 2012 Zach and Brianna underwent a Donor Egg In-Vitro Fertilization Cycle in hopes that eggs from a donor would give us the child we have prayed for. We had to take out a loan for this process as IVF with Donor Eggs costs around $30,000 for 1 cycle. We are very thankful to our egg donor, because the cycle worked! I was finally pregnant!!!! We were so in love with this little life inside me! At a routine doctor appointment at 5 months pregnant, we were devastated to learn that our baby boy did not have a heartbeat. Neither one of us had any idea something was wrong with our baby we have wanted and waited for so long. Brianna was induced and gave birth to a precious baby boy, Kort, on March 14, 2013.
Going through the loss of 2 children- Reid and Karling, a few early miscarriages, 1 late miscarriage of our son Kort, 1 Donor Egg IVF treatment in USA, we now want to become parents to a child that needs a loving home and family through the process of adoption. Our amazing son, Drew wants so badly to become a brother again. Zach and I so badly want the pitter-patter of little feet running around the house. However, financially we are asking for help to fund an adoption. We had to take out a loan to fund our IVF procedures, and feel it is very important that we stay debt free in the adoption process. The process and costs associated with adoption are daunting! We plan to apply for as many grants as we qualify for, but in order to qualify for the grants, the homestudy process needs to be completed first! We were told that the average adoption can take anywhere from 12-24 months to complete.
We are so grateful to share the love that we have with someone who needs to be loved. We know that raising a child isn't easy and the adoption process can add its own unique challenges. But we are a strong family and ready for this next step whole heartedly! We are so excited to look forward to the next journey God has led us to.
We need your help! You, our friends and family, are the ones who can support us and encourage us in this journey. More than that you can help us overcome the financial hurdle that currently stands between us and our new child.
Would you generously share your resources so that we can share our love?
If you can find it in your heart to donate whatever resources you can, we would be forever grateful. We know that this was God's plan all along and that the child we were meant to have, and the sibling Drew is meant to have is out there waiting for us through adoption.
Jeremiah 29:11 sums it up perfectly "For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Thank you for reading our story and for your possible contribution to our hopeful adoption in the near future.
